Moreover, no millennials sat in the Senate until 2021, when Democrat Jon Ossoff of Georgia defeated incumbent Republican David Perdue in the closely watched Georgia runoff. Joe Biden’s cabinet as transportation secretary, thus becoming the first millennial (and the first openly gay) cabinet member. Millennials in the United States are much more diverse than previous generations and are leading the transition from a majority white nation to a “majority minority” nation.

However, when millennials were of the same average age, in 2014, only 32 percent were homeowners. In addition, it seems that this generation may be having less sex that any other generation before it. In a survey of more than 26,000 American adults, about 15 percent of Millennials between 20 and 24 reported having no sexual partners since the age of 18. Only 6 percent of GenXers (people born in the 1960s) could claim the same.

Younger consumers still care about branch locations but weigh it around the same level as an institution’s digital and app services. However, for more complicated banking tasks, even the younger generations prefer the added assistance of a human representative. Although Baby Boomers may trail Gen X and Millennials on native technology usage, the rate at which Boomers expand their use of technology is accelerated.

(In our first in-depth look at this generation, we used the term “post-Millennials” as a placeholder.) But over the past year, Gen Z has taken hold in popular culture and journalism. Sources ranging from Merriam-Webster and Oxford to the Urban Dictionary now include this name for the generation that follows Millennials, and Google Trends data show that “Generation Z” is far outpacing other names in people’s searches for information. While there is no scientific process for deciding when a name has stuck, the momentum is clearly behind Gen Z. The same logic can be applied to any generation that is in this stage of life or younger. Consider the difference between someone in elementary school and high school. While they might be the same generation, they have very different views and needs.

Elsewhere around the world, education levels have dramatically increased. Between 1999 and 2006 the number of young people studying in postsecondary education in China more than tripled. In 2010 about 11 percent of the population had attended university, compared with 2.4 percent in 1970. Attending college in the United States, however, often requires students to take out loans, thus compounding the difficult economic situation many graduates faced during the recession. According to the Pew Research Center, millennials have a greater share of outstanding student debt and owe more than previous generations.

A Year-by-Year Guide to the Different Generations

The term “Millennial” has become the popular way to reference both segments of Gen Y (more on Y.1 and Y.2 below). And coming up last but not least is Generation Alpha, the name given by social analyst Mark McCrindle to the youngest children on the planet. By the year 2025 there will be nearly 2 billion members of Generation Alpha across the globe. If you’ve ever felt muddled by this “alphabet soup” of names — you’re not alone.

Generation Z

Their expectations may have resulted from the very encouraging, involved and almost ever-present group of parents that became known as helicopter parents. Generation Y is thought to be more family-oriented and willing to sacrifice career advancement for a better work/life balance. They typically want to be part of a team, but at the same time they desire to be in the spotlight. It’s also significantly more likely that Generation Y people don’t practice any organized religion than older generations and tend to distrust religious institutions.

Millennials characteristics

They are not afraid to question authority, are constantly seeking out new challenges and want meaningful work. Employees from Generation Y appreciate meaningful work and seek organizations with values that align with theirs. They appreciate opportunities to work abroad and value employers with strong diversity policies.

Of those millennials who said they planned to leave their company in the next two years, 71% said it was because their ”leadership skills were not being fully developed”. Different managers deal with Generation Y in starkly contrasting ways, says Prof Susan Murphy, who specialises in leader development at the University of Edinburgh business school. For Mihalis Monemvasiotis, 29, work life, creative ambitions and social life definition of generation y are intertwined. “Before, if you were slaving away at a job you didn’t enjoy, at least you could rest assured that you were paying off a mortgage and that eventually there would be some return on your hard work,” she said. She says the fact that work doesn’t pay as well as it used to and no longer guarantees much in the way of security means millennials feel it should at least be fulfilling or it simply isn’t worth it.

The number of young adult households with student debt doubled between 1998, when Gen Xers were between the ages of 18 and 33, and 2016, when millennials were between 20 and 35 years old. Moreover, the median amount of outstanding student debt was greater for millennials ($19,000) than Gen Xers ($12,800). Overall, this generation of people prefers to communicate through e-mail and text messages rather than actual face-to-face contact.

During their 20s, they are projected to earn £8,000 less than their GenX equivalents. For those aged 35 to 64, the same figures are just over 77% employed, 2.9% unemployed, and 20.6% inactive. According to the most recent set of labour market statistics, just over 71% of 16 to 34-year-olds are in employment, 5.7% are unemployed and 24.7% are economically inactive – many of them students or carers. Only about 6% of 16 to 34-year-olds in Scotland have no qualifications at all; the figure for those aged 35 to 64 is more than double that, and for those over 65 it doubles again to more than a third.

Members of Generation Y are also called Millennials because the oldest members of this generation became adults at the turn of the millennium or the beginning of the 21st century. Other things millennials value in the workplace are “reverse mentoring” – the opportunity to teach skills to older colleagues as well as learn from them – and more time spent discussing new ways of working, mentoring and developing leadership skills. Just as millennials enter the workforce in greater numbers, there is a stack of literature characterising them as job-hopping, needy, deluded narcissists. Books such as Generation Me by Jean Twenge and Not Everyone Gets a Trophy by Bruce Tulgan suggest that millennials are the worst possible employees.

There is a great deal of variation from one individual to another within any generational cohort. Nevertheless, the particular environment for any generation affects those individuals in ways that are observable as broad tendencies. Having been raised under the mantra “follow your dreams” and being told they were special, Millennials tend to be confident. While largely a positive trait, the Millennial generation’s confidence can sometimes spill over into the realms of entitlement and narcissism.

Researchers have suggested that as women have become more financially independent, they have more options and therefore do not feel the need to marry as young as earlier generations typically have. China’s birth rate hit such a low in 2020 that the government subsequently raised the number of children allowed per family from two to three. Yet researchers have observed that women around the world have been giving birth later since the 1980s; such dynamics may be the result of longer-term trends and not necessarily specific to millennials. From about 1750 to 1950, most of Western Europe transitioned from having both high birth and death rates to low birth and death rates. By the late 1960s and 1970s, the average woman had fewer than two children, and, although demographers at first expected a “correction”, such a rebound came only for a few countries. To this day, France and Sweden still have higher fertility rates than most of Europe, and both almost reached replacement level in 2010 (2.03[143] and 1.98[141] respectively).
